Reamers vs. Presses: Chef’n FreshForce Citrus Juicer Review
Lots of recipes call for a tablespoon of lemon juice to brighten up the flavor of the dish. It’s also fun to experiment with new citrus cocktails, like the pisco sour, which require a small amount of citrus juice. If this is the extent of your citrus juicing, a good manual juicer will serve you well. The key word being good. There’s a lot of juicers out there that will leave you frustrated as you try to extract just a little bit of juice out of a lemon or lime.Manual juicers come in two styles. One is a twisting mechanism (or reamer) where you take a halved piece of citrus juice, place it on a cone, and then begin to twist. These types of juicers are inefficient when compared to a manual citrus press and require considerable effort. Save yourself the money and hassle and skip these types of manual citrus juicers. Instead, go for a manual citrus press.Like its twisting counterpart, a manual citrus press needs a halved piece of citrus fruit. But instead of placing the citrus on a cone, you place it inside a cavity. You then push down with a leaver and squeeze out all the citrus juice. This requires much less effort and is much faster than the twisting option. A good citrus press works remarkably well at extracting most of the fruit’s juice. For juicing a small quantity of lemons or limes, I recommend the Chef’n FreshForce line of citrus juicers. Both the lemon and the lime juicers from this line do an excellent job of efficiently extracting citrus juice from the fruit. When it comes to manual juicing, this is as effortless as it gets. Both the lemon and the lime juicers have excellent build-quality, so they won’t be breaking on you anytime soon. If you only can afford one, then get the lemon juicer. It’s larger so it’ll fit lemons, but there’s nothing stopping you from juicing a lime in it.

Chefn’ also manufactures a manual orange citrus press (conveniently colored orange), but it is not recommended. The larger orange is much more difficult to efficiently press using manual means. Also larger citrus fruits, such as oranges and grapefruits, tend to squirt up into your face while you are try to extract juice, and that’s no fun.
When Manual Juicers Won’t Do; Go With Electric Juicers
Breville Citrus Press Review | Breville Citrus Press Pro Review
Manual juicers are great for recipes that call for a splash of lemon juice to brighten things up, but they aren’t ideal if you want a full glass of orange juice because they require a lot of time and physical exertion.
If you are looking to juice larger quantities of juice or are looking to juice larger citrus fruit such as oranges and grapefruits, you’ll want to pick up a good electric juicer. The Breville Citrus Press is an excellent choice. It’ll cost a bit of money upfront, but it’ll save you time and frustration.
It comes in two different versions. The standard version which has a plastic body and cone, and a pro version that has a stainless steel body and cone. They both function the same, and at first glance the plastic one looks stainless steel. You will be paying more for the pro version, so it all depends on whether or not the true stainless steel look is worth it. Also, with the stainless steel cone, you can be assured that no plastic is coming into contact with your juice.
Like with the manual presses, you simply cut a piece of citrus juice in half. You place the citrus fruit on the cone and then press down with a lever. This electric citrus press combines both twisting and pressing mechanisms found in the two different type of manual options. In a blink of an eye, you’ll have a juiced citrus half. This happens so fast that I recommend that you cut all your citrus fruits in half prior to juicing. You’ll have a full glass of juice in no time.
If you need to take a break from juicing, you can flip up the spout. When you return, simply drop the spout and all the accumulated juices will quickly drain into your glass.
One downside is that it doesn’t come with a juice container; however, a small glass or measuring cup works fine.
All the parts that come into contact with the fruit juice and pulp are removable and dishwasher safe for easy cleanup. The machine is lightweight, so you can either find a permanent place for it on your counter or store it away when not in use.

Not Recommended for Citrus Juicing: Standard Vegetable Juicers
You’ll want to avoid those large vegetable juicers with a chute on the top, a spinning disc in the middle, and a pulp collection bin in the back, if your primary goal is to juice citrus fruits. While these devices can do a great job at juicing vegetables and even the odd lemon or lime, they aren’t designed for citrus fruit. They are much more bulkier and harder to clean up than juicers dedicated to juicing citrus fruit.
This review of the best citrus juicers was conducted in 2020 and will be updated when new products enter the market.
Summary
Best Citrus Juicer (Electric)
This type of juicer is best for citrus juicing. This stainless steel version of the Breville Citrus Juicer comes with all the benefits of its plastic counterpart. All parts that come in contact with the citrus fruit, juice, and pulp are dishwasher safe. This juicer is highly recommended for citrus juicing.

This type of juicer is best left for juicing vegetables like carrots, kale, and spinach. They are also much more difficult to clean up. This juicer is not recommended for citrus juicing.

Best Citrus Press (Manual)
Just place half a lemon inside the cavity and push down with the leaver. Juice is easily squeezed out of the lemon. Easy peasy lemon squeezy! When it comes to manual juicing, this is as effortless as it gets (much better than manual juicers with a twisting mechanism).
Great for recipes that call for a couple tablespoons of citrus juice. This manual juicer has an excellent build-quality, so it won’t be breaking on you anytime soon.
It comes in various sizes for different citrus fruits, but only the lemon and the lime are recommended. If you only can afford one, then get the lemon juicer. It’s larger so it’ll fit lemons, but there’s nothing stopping you from juicing a lime in it.
If you like the Chef’n lemon juicer, this one operates the same but is smaller and colored specifically for limes. Limes can be juiced in the lemon juicer, so if you can only afford one, go with the lemon juicer.
This orange juicer from the Chef’n line is not recommended for two reasons. First, you are probably juicing oranges in larger quantities than lemons or limes. Using a manual juicer is slow and ineffective when compared to electric options. Secondly, larger citrus fruits, such as oranges and grapefruits, tend to squirt up when using a manual juice press; often times resulting in getting your face squirted with juice. This is no fun, and if you are serious about juicing oranges, then you should look at the electric options.

Great review, Tyler! Your insights on manual and electric citrus juicers are really helpful. I’ve been thinking about getting one, and your recommendations make the choice much easier. Thanks for sharing!
I think manual juicers are best for different recipes.
I got the Breville for my birthday last year. I use it on a daily basis. Have my oranges and grapefruits delivered to me weekly… nothing beats fresh orange juice!
