GE® XWFE vs. XWF and RPWFE vs. RPWF
The difference between XWFE and XWF filters, and RPWFE and RPWF, is that XWFE and RPWFE filters contain a RFID chip. This chip can detect leaks and has sensors to let you know when it’s time to replace your filter.
It’s important to know that refrigerators that take XWFE filters are not compatible with XWF filers, and refrigerators that take XWFE filters are not compatible wit XWF filters. Sometimes it can difficult, but not impossible, to find alternative generic filters for these fridges.

So are the rpwfe and the xwfe interchangeable?
We have a GE Cafe refrigerator. The manual calls for an RPWFE filter replacement, but the filter that came with the unit is an XWFE unit. Now I am not sure which direction to go? Appreciate any advice…..thanks.
Heads up that a bypass plug is now available for xwfe to xwf. You call he at either 1-800-gecares (ha) or directly to their parts department at 1-877-959-8688. Have your model/serial number ready.
I also recommend that if you haven’t already, make an online account with a phone number attached. I had to argue with the automated line for a bit before it put me through. Which is when it finally told me that they’re closed today, not sharing the hours.

I appreciate the comments regarding the XWFE chip removal and replacement – anyone have success? I will be purchasing and testing the generic soon. We purchased a GE December 20th, 2023 and it is currently at 48%. I’ll write down the date for replacement and will avoid the high cost GE replacement. Thanks for the work around!

You will want the XWFE replacement filter for the GFE26JWMFFS.
Or just take the RFID sticker off the old filter and wrap it around the generic one
Save your expired XWFE filter and remove the RFID chip from it by peeling back the label carefully using a blow dryer or heat gun to soften the adhesive. The chip is located 90° from the installation arrow ⬆️.
Then buy XWF replacement filters on Amazon. I recently purchased 3 Aqua Fresh filters with 4.7 star rating for under $18. Tape the chip to the replacement, or better yet, to the wall of the refrigerator where the reader is located.
Since the chip is from a used filter, it will show 0% life. Ignore that, or cover it with a piece of tape if it bugs you that much. Write the date on the replacement, or put a reminder in your calendar and replace every 6 months.
