If you’re like me, holiday dinners are all about the mashed potatoes and gravy. Sure, you need the turkey in order to make some delicious homemade gravy, and the cranberry sauce, Brussels sprouts, and stuffing are a nice addition. But Mashed potatoes are where it’s at.

But not all mashed potatoes are made equally; some are too lumpy and some are so gluey that you could hang wallpaper with it!

In order to elevate your mashed potato game and have your friends and family begging for seconds, you’ll want to have your kitchen stocked with a potato ricer. This handy kitchen gadget ensures smooth and fluffy mashed potatoes.

Potato Ricer vs. Potato Masher

Potato Ricer vs. Potato Masher: Riced potatoes via the RSVP International Potato Ricer.

You may be wondering, what is the difference between a potato masher and a potato ricer? Potato ricers consistently produce a smoother texture than potato mashers, while potato mashers can often result in lumpy mashed potatoes. This is because potato ricers use a fine grate to ensure that every bit of potato is transformed into a small strand.

As an added benefit, potato ricers help you avoid over-mashing your potatoes, preventing a sticky gluey texture. This is because potato ricers allow you to make mashed potatoes with minimal movement of the starch molecules (the part that turns gluey if overly agitated). Simply after ricing your potatoes, add your butter and milk, and give it just a few stirs. No more over mashing to get the last lump out of your mashed potatoes like you would have to do with a traditional masher.

How to Use a Potato Ricer

Potato ricers are a breeze to use. All you have to do is place your soft, cooked potatoes in the hopper, press down on the lever, and watch as your potatoes are “riced” into small strands. Once you get the hang of it, you’ll find it easier to use than a potato masher.

When it comes to a potato ricer vs a masher, a potato ricer is the clear winner if you want to create fluffy lumpfree mashed potatoes.

RSVP International Potato Ricer Review: Pros and Cons

Sizzle and Sear's Rating:
4.5/5

If you want smooth and creamy mashed potatoes with little effort, I highly recommend you ditch the potato masher and stock your kitchen with a potato ricer.

You may be wondering, what is the best ricer to buy? Well, I recommend the RSVP International Potato Ricer. It comes with a fine and coarse disc that can easily be changed so that you can customize the texture of your mashed potatoes to your preference. It also comes with a convenient hook that easily latches onto the rim of your pot, making it easy to rice a large amount of potatoes. I truly believe the RSVP International Potato Ricer is the best potato ricer out there for home cooks and easily beats out the best potato mashers.

The only downside is that it sometimes can take a bit of effort to remove the plates from the ricer when it comes time to wash them. However, I found a trick for removing them a bit more easily if they seem to be stuck: simply squeeze the two tabs on the edge of the ricer with one hand; if the plate doesn’t pop out immediately, keep the sides squeezed and with the other hand push the plate upwards from underneath the ricer. It should easily slide up and out of the hopper.

All in all, it is absolutely worth getting a potato ricer in order to improve your mashed potato game.
